Haritaki is a fruit of the deciduous Myrobalan plum tree, Cultivated from the seeds of the Terminalia chebula tree. It is a Sanskrit word that is formed of two different words

  • Harati – One thing that can effectively eliminate diseases
  • Takati – One thing that can make the body shine

Scientific name – Terminalia Chebula 

In the Regional Kannada language, there is a proverb ‘Alalekayi Vaidya’ which means

  • Alalekayi means Haritaki fruit
  • Vaidya means Doctor
